How to Beat the Winter Blahs by Carrie Burrows

Winter blahs

Feeling the post-holiday blahs? Shorter days, early nights, less sun and cold temps? Finding the motivation to get back on the health and fitness wagon is tough this time of year. Fear not. You can walk or jog, run or lift your way to a brighter mood with exercise!

Science shows that if you can get yourself off of the couch and get your feet / body moving, you’ll feel better about yourself and the world around you. Easier said than done? Not at all. Small steps lead to big changes and challenge always creates change.

When you’re active, your body releases natural chemicals that actually make you feel good. Neurotransmitters like endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine help you feel relaxed and happy. Now who doesn’t want that…naturally?

I don’t believe in “quick fixes” but moving your body is actually a quick fix that I can support because it works and it’s good for you!

3 benefits to exercising:

  • It helps clear your mind and helps you re-focus
  • It boosts your confidence. You can’t tell me that after a good workout that you don’t feel like you can take on the world!
  • Burning calories!! How else does the fat ‘melt’ away?! Being healthy and fit will give you a better outlook on your life

Moms have such a hard time at carving an hour to give to themselves. We are all so busy taking care of others that our own health suffers and that is, well… not healthy!

Start taking care of yourself so you can always take care of your loved ones; but love yourself which includes being / getting / staying healthy!

I know that you can find 15 minutes to do some kind of exercise. Go for a power walk, do some squats and push-ups. Walk the stairs in your house and count how many times you can go up and down in 10 minutes.

Build your time each day. Once you get 15 minutes done, you and your body will crave more and that’s a great craving to have!

Do what you like (bike, jog, lift weights, dance) but do something and do it everyday.

I promise that if you can do something today, tomorrow will be easier.
I also promise that when you do get moving you’ll feel so much better. Your mind and body will be thankful!

I founded Mums 'n Chums in 2009 after realizing that the area I live in was drastically underserviced as compared to surrounding areas for support and activities for growing families. Mums 'n Chums grew popular very quickly and I have been dedicated to nurturing that growth through frequent networking, social media engagement and in person meetups. By the end of its first year, Mums 'n Chums had close to 500 members and was receiving regular inquiries from fans outside of its service area, asking when we would be expanding to serve them as well. After much careful research and polling, I expanded the site in May of 2011 to cover the entire North end of the GTA (from Cambridge to Markham), areas I believe are still receiving far less attention than they deserve from other sites and family services. We also changed the focus from small scale local mom and tot meetups to more of an informative purpose, closing down our forum and adding several talented contributors to the blog. We do still offer several large scale family events per year, such as our popular Birthday Bash events and our Holiday Bash in December. Our contests have also become a member favourite, and we strive to offer amazing prizes from trusted brands like Babies R Us, La Roche Posay, Johnson's Baby and many more. In March of 2016, after months of work spent migrating all of the site's content to a new platform, Mums 'n Chums re-launched with its fresh, new look. The changes and expansion have proven a great success and we're still getting inquiries from several other cities within the Greater Toronto Area, whom we have decided to serve as well. I have built this site and its' reputation carefully and look forward to continuing its growth!
