Making the #SummerSwitch to Windows Phone: First Impressions

#SummerSwitch Nokia Windows Phone Review

I was both excited and nervous to see this arrive last week. Excited to try out this super versatile, uniquely-featured Windows Phone, but nervous about giving up my beloved Galaxy Note!

If you happen to know me, or even if you just know me through social media, you probably know how attached I am to my phone. It goes everywhere I go, and it’s almost always in my hand.

The phone I currently use (and love) is the Samsung Galaxy Note- a gadget I agreed to test out back in November when Sarah at Rogers heard I was ready for a new smartphone. It was completely different than my previous phone- a tiny Blackberry Curve that was about 4 years old. I had been reluctant to give up my BB since I really loved (still do) the ease of texting with “real” keys and didn’t think I was going to like the touchscreen, but once I had the Note in my hands I was hooked. Not long after returning my tester to Sarah, I had my own and quickly became attached.

Very attached.

So when Shelagh Cummins of MomBiz.Com made this video nominating me for the Microsoft Canada Windows Phone #SummerSwitch blogging program, and posted it on Twitter, I accepted because I love a challenge and this would definitely be one!

As part of the Summer Switch challenge, the bloggers involved agree to give up their current phones and use the Windows Phone for 30 days. Yikes! I have to admit though, after firing it up and customizing my home screen, I have discovered a lot of unusual features I love that my Note doesn’t have. I could write an entire post just on that and perhaps after this one, I will!

It’s definitely going to be an interesting journey, and I think in my case, the “challenge” is going to be on Microsoft and not me. Can they get me to switch? Stay tuned for future posts as I learn and navigate this intriguing phone!

In the meantime, here is what I think is one of the most important comparisons- the camera!:

Camera challenge

Like a lot of moms and also like many bloggers, I use my phone’s camera ALL the time. If I’m going to switch to a different phone, there’s no question it MUST have a great camera. “Great”, meaning: easy to snap, edit, enjoy and share my pictures quickly (actually, instantly) and without fuss. My kids are 5 and 2 and we’re constantly on the go- that means zero time for messing around. I want great photos the first time!

So far I’m impressed with the quality of the images the Windows Phone takes. I’m looking forward to also trying out some of the fun photo editing apps that are exclusive to Nokia Windows Phone, such as Cinemagraph , Creative Studio and SmartShoot .

Here are three side-by-side comparisons of photos I took with my Note vs. ones I took with the Windows Phone…

Side by side comparison of photo taken with Nokia Windows phone

Both of the above images shown were taken using flash. Neither image shown was touched up in any way in terms of colour or composition. Strawberry images were cropped (but otherwise not altered) in order to show similar subject matter. Original size of all Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone images was 918 × 1632 px, original size of all Samsung Galaxy Note images was 2448 × 3264 px.

Super closeup to show detail. Both images shown were taken without flash. I was very surprised by the differences in these two shots. Neither image shown was touched up in any way in terms of colour or composition. Strawberry images were cropped (but otherwise not altered) in order to show similar subject matter. Aside from having a sudden craving for strawberries, what do you think? I’d love to get your thoughts and / or questions. What else would you like to know about Windows Phone?

I founded Mums 'n Chums in 2009 after realizing that the area I live in was drastically underserviced as compared to surrounding areas for support and activities for growing families. Mums 'n Chums grew popular very quickly and I have been dedicated to nurturing that growth through frequent networking, social media engagement and in person meetups. By the end of its first year, Mums 'n Chums had close to 500 members and was receiving regular inquiries from fans outside of its service area, asking when we would be expanding to serve them as well. After much careful research and polling, I expanded the site in May of 2011 to cover the entire North end of the GTA (from Cambridge to Markham), areas I believe are still receiving far less attention than they deserve from other sites and family services. We also changed the focus from small scale local mom and tot meetups to more of an informative purpose, closing down our forum and adding several talented contributors to the blog. We do still offer several large scale family events per year, such as our popular Birthday Bash events and our Holiday Bash in December. Our contests have also become a member favourite, and we strive to offer amazing prizes from trusted brands like Babies R Us, La Roche Posay, Johnson's Baby and many more. In March of 2016, after months of work spent migrating all of the site's content to a new platform, Mums 'n Chums re-launched with its fresh, new look. The changes and expansion have proven a great success and we're still getting inquiries from several other cities within the Greater Toronto Area, whom we have decided to serve as well. I have built this site and its' reputation carefully and look forward to continuing its growth!
